Why are you here?

When assessing multiple job offers it is important to keep in mind why you are searching for a new job and what you would like to accomplish. Whether you are looking for a higher salary, advancement opportunities, better benefits, flexibility, etc., take time to seriously consider what you are looking for on the next rung of your career. It is helpful to make a chart comparing how your potential employers meet these immediate needs.

Do you like it here?

Once you have assessed how employers stack up to each other with your immediate objectives, it is time to take a deeper look into their employee culture. While it is important that you have your career goals met, it is equally vital that you fit into the environment of your new company. No amount of money or benefits will keep you happy and satisfied if you dislike your work environment.

Where would you like to go?

You’ve considered your immediate career goals and the corporate cultures of the companies interested in you. Now is the time to revisit your career plan and take a look at your long-term objectives. Which employer(s) fit into where you want to be a few years down the road? Do they provide opportunities for advancement? How about educational opportunities? Is the business poised for future growth? Will they give you chances to stretch out beyond your current skill set and take on challenging projects?

How do you communicate your decision?

The short answer is quickly. You certainly want to inform your new employer that you are accepting their offer as soon as you make your decision. Otherwise, you run the risk that the job is no longer available. After you have secured the new position you must notify the other companies as soon as possible out of professional courtesy. You should tell them about your decision and thank them for the opportunity. It is very likely that after rejecting an offer from a potential employer that they will never make an offer to you in the future. You still want to exit on the right foot so they can move on and find other qualified candidates to fill their openings.
