Biometrics, AuT, AI, what are the important technology trends to expect in 2019? With Q4 in full swing, and the new year approaching, the following 10 are deserving of your attention.

  • Biometrics

Biometrics employs an array of technologies to authenticate a person’s identity. Unique markers that may be used in biometrics include facial recognition, fingerprints, voice recognition, iris prints, signature, gait, and many more. Biometrics are currently deployed to protect airlines, airports, computers, databases and restricted access areas. As security becomes more vital, the biometrics field is expected to expand.

  • AuT

From self-navigating drones to autonomous cars to robotics, autonomous things (AuT) utilize artificial intelligence and advanced machine learning to create autonomous devices that interact with humans, without human direction. The potential for AuT is very broad with applications currently being developed for medicine, military, agriculture, manufacturing, transportation, and appliances.

  • Artificial Intelligence

At the heart of applications across multiple domains is AI. AI services, platforms and frameworks will enhance everything from application development to autonomous vehicles. Look for new platforms to be developed that make development and deployment even faster.

  • Augmented Analytics

Augmented Analytics automates insight generation via deep machine learning and AI algorithms to effectively replace data scientists. Data scientists are expensive and spend 80% of their time on mundane tasks such as cleaning their data. Augmented Analytics engines are more efficient at gathering data, cleaning it, analyzing it and developing actionable plans. This results in a drastic cost decrease, which will allow for SMBs to have access to powerful insights, thus growing the market for Augmented Analytics.

  • 5G

All of the trends for 2019 are dependent on one thing – faster communications. Trials are being launched at the end of 2018 in Austin, Waco, Kalamazoo, South Bend, Dallas and Atlanta, with Phase I of 5G specifications expected to be complete by the end of Q1 2019. 5G is certainly one of the hottest trends to follow in 2019, and it’s expected to remain at the top in 2020.

  • Blockchain

Blockchain developers are in high demand. As platforms grow and become standardized, the technology will undoubtedly spread to new industries, providing even more opportunities for developers.

  • Privacy

This is a very complicated trend, which is why it is worth noting. Social media, e-com shopping, ad targeting, search engine results, etc. all collect behavioral data on their users to enhance UX. There is user convenience provided by that, but at what cost to privacy? How much convenience will users give up to increase their privacy? How can the industry evolve to providing individualized experiences and enhanced privacy? These are difficult questions, and questions that provide a lot of opportunity in the tech sector.

  • Smart Spaces

This trend has been accelerating in recent years. Smart Spaces technology is expected to continue on a steep trajectory, fueled by smart cities, smart homes, connected factories, and digital workspaces.

  • Quantum Computing

Quantum Computing is a trend that should not be ignored. As QC matures, we will solve extraordinarily complex problems that are currently impossible to address. CIOs are actively identifying applications for QC. Realistic expectations for deployment are still several years out, however opportunities exist for digital pioneers.

  • Immersive Technologies

Immersive technologies will continue to become more widespread. Augmented reality, virtual reality and mixed reality will find much bigger roles in military, medical, entertainment, and service-based applications.
