It’s that time of year when romance is in the air and lovers everywhere are thinking about chocolates, roses, Champagne and career changes. Wait, career changes on Valentine’s Day? Why not? Actually, it is one of the best days of the year to contemplate making a change.

Q1, specifically January and February, are generally regarded as the best months of the year for job seekers. Strategic plans are updated for the new year and employers’ free up budgets in January to support these plans. That translates to the busiest time of the year for recruiters and hiring managers scrambling to fill newly opened positions. Valentine’s day is the mid-point of the quarter, which makes it the perfect time to be on the hunt.

Another interesting phenomenon happens on Valentine’s Day. Job applications and resume submissions decline anywhere from 8 – 11%. Perhaps people are caught up in the holiday and aren’t focused on career changes on Feb 14. Whatever the reason, it certainly creates an opportunity for the eager. I can’t think of a better time to apply for a job than when more jobs are available and fewer applicants are bidding.

With Valentine’s Day upon us most people are focused on showing their special one just how special they are, and you should do the same. Just don’t neglect giving some loving attention to your career. It may be the perfect time to woo a new employer. Just like perusing a new love interest, take care in finding a new position. Take time to get to know your new interest. Dress to impress. Be an active listener, and finally, add a bit of flattery – but just a touch. Who knows, Cupid may shoot his arrow into the heart of a new career for you.
