Careers seem to race along at a blistering pace. This is especially true for IT professionals at the forefront of technology. Keeping pace with emerging technologies and applications often become such a priority that we neglect to document our updated skill sets. I like to take the time at the end of each year to update my credentials on my resume, social media platforms, and with professional organizations. You never know when you may experience a change in your career path, and it is a good idea to start the year with up to date information.

Keep Documentation

Through the course of the year you will have many new assignments, certifications, presentations, positions, etc., and it can be difficult to recall all of your accomplishments after the fact. Set up a simple system to organize your new credentials. I use a simple Word document. Every time I have a new credential, I jot down a short, descriptive sentence and the applicable date. At the end of the year I use the document to ensure that I don’t overlook an important accomplishment.

Resume

Start by updating your resume from your list of newly acquired credentials. While you’re at it, this is also a great time to review your entire resume for any other edits that may be needed.

Social Media

The obvious place to start is your LinkedIn account. Use your newly revised resume as a guide for updating LinkedIn. This will keep everything in sync and consistent. If you use other social media platforms for professional purposes make sure to update those as well. Don’t forget to check your company’s profiles which may contain information about you.

Other Platforms

Finally, you should update all other outlets you use to promote your career. Do you have a website? Perhaps your information is presented on your company’s website. Also remember to have current information on any freelance sites, professional organization sites, and job searching platforms you utilize.

You worked hard to earn these new credentials, make sure that they are accurately reflected. It only takes a couple of hours each year, and it is a great investment in your career.
